Audits

OH&S Audits are an important part of today's business environment. Whether you are in the Construction Industry, Mining Industry, Electrical Industry etc. assessing your workplace should be a matter of course. A Safety Audit does not need to be expensive or consume alot of time.

A basic Safety Audit can be conducted by yourself in your own workplace. Its as easy as walking into your workplace environment with a fresh perspective and taking note of vehicle traffic, parking, pedestrian access/areas etc. and thinking about how these areas could then be safer. Take note of Surfaces, are there already traffic lines, and safety signage displayed to instruct people what plant and equipment is being used onsite. Do employees and visitors know to report to a safe meeting point, or an evacuation point?

By breaking down the job roles within the workplace, and thinking about the OH&S impacts in the way each job is performed it allows for an easier understanding of Safety Hazards.

  • Should personal protective equipment be warn?
  • Could products or equipment be stored or handled mechanically instead of manually?
  • Are staff inducted or trained how to work safely and do they have the opportunity to ask questions and sign off after their OHS training?
  • Are safe work procedures provided for processes, plant and equipment?
  • Are work areas tidy?
  • Do employees and visitors know what to do in an emergency?

These are just a couple of many ideas for conducting your own Safety Audit within the workplace. Although this brief tip obviously does not cover everything, but provides a good groundfloor to start on. By creating a Work Safe Environment in your workplace, you can have the assurance of knowing your tackling everything possible to provide your employees with a Safe Workplace. Turning your workplace into a safer place most likely wont happen over night, but is possible.
